On Friday, June 1, 2012, Trevelyn Terrell Hinton, 28, of the 600 block of Audrey Lane, Oxon Hill, Maryland, was sentenced by Judge Greenberg of the Montgomery County Circuit Court to 35 years in prison for attempted voluntary manslaughter, 1st degree assault, false imprisonment, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and possession of a handgun by a prohibited person.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2010, Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section investigated the officer-involved shooting that occurred in Silver Spring. At approximately 11:35 a.m., Montgomery County Police received a call to assist Takoma Park Police with the report of a shooting that had just occurred. The preliminary investigation revealed that a Takoma Park Police officer in the area of Sligo Creek Parkway and Houston Avenue in Takoma Park, observed a late model black Camaro traveling at a high rate of speed and endangering pedestrians. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver would not comply. A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle was followed into the parking lot of East Spring Elementary School located at 631 Spring Street. There it collided with a pole in the parking lot. The driver bailed out and ran. The officer followed on foot as the suspect, later identified as Hinton, ran behind the school down to and across Thayer Avenue and into the parking lot serving the Thayer Terrace Apartments at 525 Thayer Avenue in Silver Spring.

At some point during the foot chase, Hinton produced a gun and shots were exchanged between Hinton and the officer. No one was struck or injured. Just as Hinton was next to a side entrance to the apartment building, an adult male came out of the building. He was grabbed by Hinton and held as a shield. The officer gave verbal commands to release the hostage. Hinton complied and he was taken into custody without further incident. After Hinton was taken into custody, controlled dangerous substance (CDS) was found on his person.
