FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On October 26, 2012, at approximately 4:09 p.m., Takoma Park Police responded to the 1300 block of University Blvd., Takoma Park, Maryland, in front of the Cricket Wireless store, for reports of a robbery of an armored car in progress with shots fired. Montgomery County Police and Prince George’s County Police also responded out due to the nature of the incident. Once on scene, investigators determined that a guard driving an armored car service was exiting the establishment after making a delivery and a pick up for a known quantity of currency. As he was returning to his armored vehicle, he was confronted by a suspect who pointed an unknown caliber handgun at him and ordered him to ground. The guard attempted to flee back to the establishment when a second suspect, also armed with a handgun, charged towards him and opened fire. The guard returned fire causing both suspects to flee towards a waiting gray Jeep Cherokee, which was situated in the parking lot approximately six spaces west of the related establishment. As the suspect vehicle backed out of the space, the guard continued to fire at the vehicle as he retreated to the front of the armored vehicle using it as a cover. The suspect driver fled west in the parking lot towards New Hampshire Avenue.
As a result of the gunfire, two bystanders were struck by ricocheting bullet fragments, but their injuries were non-life threatening and did not require immediate medical attention.l
At approximately 4:19 p.m., Takoma Park Police were notified that a second shooting and carjacking had just taken place in the 6700 block of Conway Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland, with a gunshot victim. The suspects from the armored car robbery abandoned the jeep they had been driving and approached a citizen getting into his vehicle. One of the suspects shot the victim, taking his vehicle and fleeing the area. He was initially taken to the Washington Adventist Hospital and subsequently flown to an area trauma center. The condition of the victim is unknown at this time.
The vehicle that was car-jacked was recovered after being set on fire in an alley behind the 5200 block of Kansas Lane, NW, Washington, D.C.
The two suspects are described as:
Suspect 1: black male, dark clothing, black jacket, black mask (armed with a handgun)
Suspect 2: black male, dark clothing, hooded top, black or gray mask (armed with a handgun).
These suspects are wanted for attempted murder, armed robbery, 1st degree assault and reckless endangerment, among other charges.
Takoma Park Police Criminal Investigators, Montgomery County Major Crimes, the Special Assignment Team (SAT), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrived on the scene and assumed the investigation.
